The State of California passed legislation that affects continuation coverage in California.

AB 1401 was signed into law in 2002 and affects qualified beneficiaries in the federal Cal-COBRA program. Enrollees in the federal COBRA program who: started federal COBRA coverage on or after January 1, 2003; have less than 36 months of COBRA coverage; have exhausted the entire federal COBRA coverage period available to them; and are not eligible for other group medical coverage or entitled to Medicare, may be eligible to purchase additional continuation coverage under Cal-COBRA per California State law.
